Could You Be Choline Deficient?

If you have fatty liver, poor focus or brain fog, muscle weakness, or exercise intolerance, you may be choline deficient.

Choline is an essential nutrient needed for liver fat metabolism, brain neurotransmitters (acetylcholine), muscle function, and methylation. Low levels are a well-known cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver and can impair cognition and physical performance.

Common food sources of choline:

Egg yolks (one of the best sources)

Beef and chicken liver

Beef, pork, fish (salmon, cod)

Dairy

Soybeans and tofu

Daily choline needs:

Men: ~550 mg/day

Women: ~425 mg/day

Pregnancy/Lactation: 450–550 mg/day

👉 Most adults do not meet these requirements, especially those avoiding eggs or animal products, postmenopausal women, and patients with fatty liver.

If you’re concerned about choline deficiency, liver health, or brain function, we can help personalize a plan.
