Fast food and fatty liverFatty liver is the most common liver abnormality. It is exploding in America because of the obesity epidemic. Between 15-and 50% have fatty liver. It is considered a pre-diabetic sign and an indication of higher cardiovascular risk.

Fatty liver can improve with weight loss. This is particularly effective if done through carbohydrate restriction (less than 30 grams of carbs per day). It is even more effective if the carbohydrate you restrict is fructose. Fructose is present in most fruit, but more prominently in sodas and processed foods.

Some supplements can also help. Lecithin 2 grams daily and melatonin 10 mg at bedtime have shown favorable responses. Quercetin, which is a flavonoid derived from apples and onions that has other favorable metabolic effects is also helpful.
