Higher Cholesterol & Longevity: What the Evidence Really Shows
Contrary to popular belief, higher cholesterol is often associated with longer life, especially in older adults.
Large studies of adults over age 60 show that those with higher total cholesterol or LDL frequently have lower all-cause mortality than those with low levels. In contrast, low cholesterol is often linked to chronic illness, inflammation, cancer, frailty, and poor nutritional status.
Cholesterol is biologically essential, playing a critical role in:
Hormone production (progesterone, testosterone, cortisol)
Brain and nervous system function
Immune resilience
Cell membrane repair and integrity
Studies of centenarians consistently show that many long-lived individuals maintain normal or mildly elevated cholesterol, often alongside good HDL levels and healthy metabolic markers.
When cholesterol is evaluated without accounting for age, metabolic health, inflammation, and hormonal status, its relationship to longevity and disease risk can be mischaracterized.
