Adrenal Insufficiency Often Goes Undiagnosed
The adrenal gland is an often neglected gland in the medical community. During high stress times, high levels of cortisol can contribute to weight gain, anxiety and sleep disturbance. As the adrenals are further stressed, symptoms of deficiency can occur. The adrenals are critical to produce the original spark of energy, cortisol, so profound or resistant fatigue can occur. Loss of appetite, depressed mood, and varying weight can also occur. The diagnosis of adrenals are problematic for most. Conventional medicine is able to make a diagnosis of adrenal fatigue only after there has been nearly a complete cardiovascular shutdown. More subtle forms of adrenal insufficiency will go undiagnosed by conventional medical as it did in my case, even by an endocrinologist. Adrenals, like other hormones, need a optimal approach like the other systems. I have personally had profound adrenal failure (Addison’s disease) so I am well acquainted with the diagnosis and treatment of this uncommon, but potentially very serious and life threatening, if not at least life challenging, conditions.
The adrenals also produce the master hormone pregnenolone, and cortisol’s counter-balancing hormone dhea. These can also have profound effects on health including energy, weight control, brain function, memory, cardiovascular health, blood sugar, metabolism, quality of life, and more. Only an expert understands the optimal levels for health
Diagnosing and Treating the Thyroid
How often have I heard this story? The patient goes into the doctor with complaints of fatigue, weight gain, sometimes hair loss and brain fog, and is convinced that it must be thyroid. Unfortunately the patient is told that their thyroid is normal, and they are sent back to life with all of the same symptoms and no relief, if this sounds like you read on. There is hope and treatment.
First, in order to really diagnose a thyroid problem, the physician must test more than a TSH test. Unfortunately that is where about 95% of physicians stop, with an archaic inaccurate test. The TSH is the pituitaries opinion of whether it is receiving enough thyroid precursor. I look at it like a fire: The TSH tells me if the thyroid is getting enough wood to make a fire. What is doesn’t tell you is how big a fire are you building with the firewood.
In order to see if the body is effectively converting the wood to a fire, you need additional tests, amongst them, free t3, free t4 and in some cases reverse t3. These numbers, if interpreted properly will give me the real answer of thyroid is function in the system,
Laboratory tests are based on the population average for a test. If you look around the mall or McDonalds, we are not a healthy population. 2/3 of our population is overweight or obese. I don’t want their average numbers! But even a normal number can be quite bad, you can have a result in the lower end of the curve, and still have all of the symptoms of thyroid, and still be considered “normal”. In my office, I don’t want a normal result, I want an optimal reading. Optimal is in the HIGHER END OF THE CURVE, and that is where people function the best in terms of quality of life and health.
Interestingly enough, that if the numbers are corrected to optimal, then most of the symptoms often go away! So was the thyroid really normal, or just not in the optimal range? I think the latter. If you want optimal treatment, then contact my office for an appointment.
Treat Wrinkles with Fillers, for a More Youthful Appearance
Injectables, or "fillers", treat wrinkles caused by over-active muscles. Generally it is used from the eyes up. There are advanced uses that can treat winkles in the chin and lip areas that I am also trained for. I have been using injectibles since 2008. I have had no major problems with it since then.
There are various forms of Injectables. There is the name brand that most people are familiar with, which is Botulin Toxin A. There is a more refined version called Xeomin which is also effective and cost-saving. There is also Botulin Toxin B or Dysport. We don’t normally stock this, but could be available on request.
Fillers are meant to replace lost volume, usually but not exclusively below the eyes. These wrinkles occur as the body loses it supporting connective tissue and these folds generally do not repond to fillers. Smile lines, frown lines, jowls, and thin lips are common uses. With a filler, you can reshape the face to a more youthful experience. I particularly like to replace cheek volume as this gives a more youthful happy appearance and improves line-like smile lines as well. I have been trained in advanced filler techniques since 2008.
