Beans are controversial in diet today. The paleo diet and ketogenic exclude them, but is this correct? The Paleo cites their relative absence during our evolution, and problems with the nutrient. Beans contain Phytic acid which can block nutrient absorption. They also contain a sugar galaco-ligosaccharides, which can cause digestive issues. They also contain lectins, which can damage intestinal lining leading to leaky gut. They are also 80 % sugar, which would raise the question if they would promote weight gain and aggravation of blood sugar issues. The ketogenic diet restricts them because of their sugar content that could promote sugar metabolism and stop the fat burning process. Hence, they are limited in both the Paleo and ketogenic diet. But what’s the other side of the coin? We’ll see in the next issue.
